JAZZ HANDS
Finally! The mystery of why some students do Warrior One with their hands apart and fingers spread wide is solved.
Read Sunday's New York Times article about John Friend and Anusara Yoga here.
Read about the fallout here.
Better yet - ignore the articles and do your practice.
Isn't it hands apart if your shoulders are tight, and hands together if you can keep the blades moving down the back??
ReplyDeleteIn the traditional systems, the palms are together and so are the fingers. In ashtanga this is for energetic flow.
ReplyDelete...and all is coming. indeed.
ReplyDeletetry both ways & feel the difference.
personally occasionally spreading fingers feels good on the hand muscles, but that can be done best in down dog.
i need to keep my fingers together.
Dear CK
ReplyDeleteWe have the opposite instruction, to get those hands and arms as close together as possible, and it's not easy but it feels good trying. It's good that you point it's for the energy flow.
Thanks for the links. Thank goodness the rebuttal and the commentary agains the NYT are short; it feels like what needs to be read. NYT has great journalism, but sometimes mistakes can occur. The article, which I read only 2 pages, becomes negative very soon. One my other interests is calorie restriction, and when it is treated in the media it sometimes makes practitioners look like freaks. This article does something similar with yoga. So what if a yogi flies on a magic carpet around the world giving workshops?
